Florida lawns, by the numbers
§ 01 · The grass guide
Five grasses grow in Florida yards. Here's how to tell them apart.
Every grass wants something different: a different mowing height, a different amount of water, a different fertilizer. Knowing yours is step one.
Compare all five side by side
| Grass | Shade | Drought | Foot traffic | Salt | Upkeep | Mow height |
|---|
§ 02 · The Florida lawn calendar
What your lawn needs, month by month.
Central Florida doesn't do spring cleanup and fall cleanup. It does a dry spring, a soaking summer, and a fertilizer blackout. Pick a month.
§ 03 · Watering days
Which days can you water? Type your house number.
West Orange County follows St. Johns River Water Management District rules. Your days depend on your address and the time of year.
- Never between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Most of it evaporates.
- About ¾ inch per zone, and no more than an hour per zone.
- Skip it after a good rain. A rain sensor does this for you.
Rules shown are the district's standard schedule. Always check your city's current rules, since they can tighten during a drought.
§ 04 · What's wrong with my lawn?
The six Florida lawn problems we see every week.
Find the one that looks like your yard. Each one has a different fix, and some of them aren't what you'd guess.
Apr to Sep · St. AugustineYellow, then brown, patches in the sunniest spots
Likely cause: chinch bugs. They start near driveways and sidewalks, where the heat builds up, and look a lot like drought.
What to do: part the grass at the edge of the patch. Tiny black bugs with white wings mean chinch bugs. We treat the hot spots only, not the whole yard.
Nov to Apr · St. Augustine, ZoysiaBrown rings that grow outward in cool, wet weather
Likely cause: large patch, a fungus that loves cool nights and wet grass.
What to do: water less, and only in the early morning. A fungicide stops the spread, and the grass fills back in once it warms up.
Jun to Sep · any lawnRound, shiny, lily-pad leaves taking over
Likely cause: dollarweed. It's a sign the lawn is getting too much water.
What to do: cut back your watering first. Healthy, thick grass crowds it out, and we spot-treat the rest.
Jul to Oct · St. Augustine, BermudaGrass looks chewed, and moths fly up at dusk
Likely cause: sod webworms or armyworms. The moths lay eggs, and the caterpillars eat the blades at night.
What to do: act fast. Armyworms can strip a lawn in a few days. We check for them on every late-summer visit.
Jun to Sep · St. AugustineGray spots with purple edges on the blades
Likely cause: gray leaf spot. Hot, humid nights and too much nitrogen bring it on.
What to do: no fertilizer for now (it's the blackout anyway), water only in the morning, and a fungicide if it spreads.
After heavy rain · Bahia, St. AugustineThe whole lawn goes pale yellow
Likely cause: the summer rain washed the iron out of our sandy soil.
What to do: an iron spray greens it up within a week, and iron is allowed during the summer fertilizer ban.

§ 07 · From the neighborhood
What our customers say over the fence.
"They told me my brown spots were chinch bugs, not the sprinklers. Fixed in two weeks. My last company just kept telling me to water more."
"The photo text after every mow is the best part. I know exactly what they did, and I can see my lawn getting better week by week."
"Same two guys every Tuesday for three years. They know my yard better than I do."
§ 08 · Questions
Good questions, straight answers.
Do I need to be home?
No. We just need the gate unlocked or a code. You get a text when we arrive and when we leave.
Why don't you fertilize in the summer?
Orange County bans nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer on lawns from June 1 to September 30 to protect our lakes and springs. We feed heavier in spring and fall instead, and use iron in summer to keep the color.
What if it rains on my mowing day?
We move you to the next dry day that week and text you the new time. Light rain, we still mow.
Can you fix my sprinklers?
Small fixes, yes: broken heads, clogged nozzles, and timer settings. Bigger repairs we hand to a licensed irrigation partner.
Is there a contract?
No. Pay month to month and cancel anytime with a text. We just ask for one week's notice.
§ 09 · Free lawn quote
Let's take a look at your lawn.
Tell us a little about your yard. We'll text you to set up a free lawn walk, usually within a day.
